A Strategy for Family Medicine’s Future

We want to transform the family medicine specialty to ensure that we can meet the nation’s health care needs and ultimately, improve the health of every American. Specifically, this means:

  • Furthering the evolution of the Patient-Centered Medical Home
  • Advancing the use of technology
  • Ensuring a strong primary care workforce
  • Shifting to comprehensive primary care payment

Family Medicine for America’s Health Strategic Plan Summary

The strategic planning portion of Family Medicine for America’s Health was tasked with addressing four questions:

  1. Core Attributes: What are the core attributes of family medicine today—and what do they need to be in the future—for our profession to achieve the Triple Aim in the service of our patients in the context of the larger healthcare landscape?
  2. Evolving Ecosystem: How should family medicine change to respond to the challenges of an evolving healthcare system in order to best meet the needs of the nation?
  3. Workforce: What changes are needed in the continuum of education (from medical school, through residency, and into CME) to train family physicians needed in the new healthcare system?
  4. Communicating Our Value: How do we best communicate to relevant stakeholders the value and benefits of family medicine and the important role family physicians play in meeting the healthcare needs of the US population?

Uniting these questions is the overall goal of this project:

To develop a strategy and communication plan to continue the transformation of family medicine to meet the needs of the American public by achieving the Triple Aim of better care, better health, and lower cost.

Family Medicine cannot accomplish these core strategies alone

No single primary care profession could. Achieving these objectives will require that we work together with our primary care colleagues, patients, policymakers, and other key stakeholders in healthcare.

To implement the plan we have organized a volunteer workforce in seven major areas to carry out actions in pursuit of these strategies. The seven areas are: Practice, Payment, Workforce Education and Development, Health Equity, Technology, Research, and Engagement.

To complement this strategic work, Family Medicine for America’s Health has launched a communications campaign, Health Is Primary, to advocate for the values of family medicine, demonstrate the benefits of primary care and drive patient activation. To learn more, go to healthisprimary.org.
